UPS and the car unlocked / cycle battery?

Still looking for some details. Recently "recharged" an old sinusoidal APC SmartUPS 1400 with two-cycle batteries that happen to fit inside the unit. But these are not sealed. I recently took them out because I was trying use the unit for a backup power system. I found this did not work - so have only been in the closet for use as backup power in the television or projector. What is the real risk of fire / explosion with these batteries? I had to run in the closet for 3 months or so now without any problems .. but I would like think that could be turned on when I'm not close. Are you saying that if I have a lighter up to this thing while it is going to explode? I'm confused about this whole hydrogen gas lead-acid battery thing. Please only informed responses. Thanks!

Hydrogen can be generated when the batteries are charged. But the low rates that are used with UPS, there is little danger.

Why some electronics manufactures tell you to not use a surge protector?

I have a front projection theater. Last week, my projector would not start, but there were bright signs in it. I called Sony, making the projector, and ordered me to connect directly to the wall. Why this difference?

Surge protectors are often high peak voltage clamp and current clamp to protect digital electronics. However - projector bulbs are high current power devices. I think they need an increase in the first few seconds to turn. A surge suppressor could not be suitable for a type of this device.
